Quite a few of you girls have been asking me about my protein supplements i.e. whether I take them or not, which brand I take, or what are the impacts of protein supplements on my fitness journey - so I would like to tell you all the details about it in this post and hopefully you would find it useful to your fitness journey!
Having a brother who has been competing in power-lifting for a few years already, as well as a boyfriend who has been taking protein powder regularly after his workouts, protein supplement is not something that is new to me. I am already used to the sight of huge tubs of protein powder at home and also protein shakers in the kitchen sink. The thing here is, you see, I have never linked it to ME myself. As someone who never really worked out and just wanted to party for the rest of my life, I never really thought that one day I might even consider taking protein supplements. Actually, even when I was starting my fitness journey 4 months ago, the thought of taking protein supplements also never crossed my mind. Somehow, in my mind, I seemed to connect the word "Protein Shakes" with "Muscular" and "Big Guys". Oh, and also "Pimples" because some guy friends of my boyfriend had to stop drinking protein shakes as whey protein might cause a skin breakouts for some people.
It was until Week 6 - half way through BBG1.0 - that I started to consider the possibility of taking protein supplements because I was feeling like even though I worked out a lot, I was mainly just losing weight but not really getting much stronger/ toned. I do want to see those abs sooner you know! ;p The only concern I had would be the possible negative impacts on my skin - as a girly girl, I do care a LOT about my skin haha but seeing how my boyfriend has been taking 2 scoops of protein powder a day but still has skin as smooth as a baby, I understand that not everyone will get pimples because of whey protein - it depends more on your skin type and etc. Instead of immediately spending money on a huge tub of protein powder, my boyfriend kindly gave me a ziploc bag of protein powder (around 10 scoops) for me to try for 1 week and so I could see how my body would react to it before committing myself to a huge tub.
After the one week trial, I felt great and my skin was completely alright (might be because of the fact that I take birth control pills which leads to hormones control - I have not had any breakouts since I have been taking them) and therefore I decided to buy one tub of whey protein powder. I have been taking a scoop of the protein powder as protein shake after each of my resistance work out ever since then and I honestly have no regrets on it. The only thing, however, was that I did not know if the protein powder I was taking was the best for me comparing to other ones on the market. As some of you have probably also heard that a lot of protein supplements CLAIMED that they are healthy and good for your body but they actually contain a lot of crappy/ artificial stuffs that can be very very harmful to your body. The one I was taking is one of the most popular ones in the market with a lot of evidence showing that it does not contain crappy stuffs - but the only thing was that it is artificially flavored and sweetened and was therefore higher in sugar content.
It was around a couple of weeks ago that I came across Unique Muscle - a protein and health supplements brand with all of its products gluten-free and naturally sweetened with Stevia - one of the healthiest sweeteners in the world as a sugar substitute. They also provide a whole range of vegan and vegetarian options for protein and health supplements http://uniquemuscle.com.au/product-category/vegan-vegetarian/ - I am simply amazed by how healthy their products are!
I am extremely grateful that I have now found the perfect healthy protein supplement for my fitness journey! The two supplements that I am currently taking would be 1. Lean Up - Whey Protein http://uniquemuscle.com.au/shop/lean-up-whey-protein/ and 2. Slim It - ALC http://uniquemuscle.com.au/shop/slimit/. I would describe more in details on why I am taking these two supplements and how they contribute to my fitness journey.
1. Lean Up - Whey ProteinThis is basically a healthier protein supplement option to replace the previous artificially flavored and sweetened one that I had been taking. The reason I take it after each of my resistance/ weight training (not cardio) is that this whey protein supplement is made with a combination of WPI - whey protein isolate and WPC, whey protein concentrate. It is perfect to take during/ within 30 minutes after your resistance/ weight training because during your workouts, your muscles tissues will be torn/ damaged (which is normal during a resistance workout) and protein supplement assist in quick absorption of the protein that is needed to repair and rebuild the muscles which will in turn stimulate muscles growth. As a result, your workouts are more effective for you to reach your fitness goals!
2. Slim It - ALCContaining one of the most effective nutrients that is most commonly known for fat metabolism, it is best for those who look to slim down and is perfect to consume half and hour before your Cardio workouts or during your powerwalks to increase the fat-burning capacity.
Apart from these two, they also have a range of healthy coffee, hot chocolate and etc which are perfect healthy substitutes to your daily coffee and drinks that are a lot more fattening.
I have to say protein supplements did contribute greatly to my fitness journey - I feel stronger, and my muscles growth is a lot faster comparing than when I did not take protein supplements. I know a lot of you girls are concerned that taking protein supplements would make you fat and this is why I think the Lean Up Protein from Unique Muscle is such a great option for those who want to tone up but at the same time want to stay lean.
*PLEASE NOTE THAT I do not take protein supplement as a meal replacement - I drink both of these supplements on top of my regular meals to assist on muscle growth and to nourish my body**
